Beloved Names of God...series "Carpenter"

Carpenter

"Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph and Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him."
Mark 6:3 NIV

  • Name of God the Son
  • Jesus is referred to as "the carpenter" once and as "the carpenter's son" once.
  • Jesus' earthly father, Joseph, was a tekton, which means "carpenter, itinerant craftsman, builder, or skilled artisan" in Greek. By any interpretation, he was a man who worked with his hands, and his son Jesus probably learned the same trade.
  •  In this verse Jesus had been teaching in the synagogue. The people listening had a hard time reconciling the miracle working teacher with the man whose family they all knew.
God came to live among us! Not as a prince, but as a carpenter!
He came to be with the "salt of the earth," the common people. God would, forever after, be in the day's toil, the frustrations of neighbors, the joys of family, the fears of the vulnerable, and the desperation of the poor, because Jesus lived with these people.
Jesus knew them (and through them, knew us) as only their loved ones could.
