Sunlight
Prescribed dose:
Get out into the sunshine everyday for at least 20-30 minutes. Open curtains and blinds to let sunlight into your home.
Additional recommendations:
You need the sun's ultraviolet light for health, but be sensible when exposing yourself to the sun. The sun is hottest at noon, avoid going out into the sun when it's too hot. Lower your dietary fat intake.
Benefits:
- Source of energy.
- Ultraviolet rays convert cholesterol in the skin to vitamin D, a vitamin necessary for strong bones and teeth.
- Ultraviolet rays are antiseptic and destroy bacteria and viruses, yeast, molds, and dust mites.
- Lowers blood pressure, cholesterol, and fat levels in the blood.
- Stimulates red and white blood cell production.
- Calming and relaxing to the nervous system.
- Wounds and many skin diseases are benefited by exposure to sunlight.
- Relieves depression.
Possible side effects:
Overexposure to sunlight can cause sunburn, peeling skin, dry patches, redness, scaliness, and stroke. Also a diet high in fat puts one at risk for developing skin cancer when exposed to excess sunlight.
