Keeper of a Recipe - My Experience

So HERE I shared the recipe for this natural antibiotic that my friend made for me. It was so very helpful to me while I had covid and it convinced me that it was a keeper kind of recipe.

I am sure you have heard that most if not many people who get covid lose their sense of smell and taste. It was no different for me. This time I think it was more pronounced than last time because this time I was very congested as well. When I first began to take this antibiotic - I could not smell it or taste it. Not at all! And let me tell you - once you try this stuff for yourself - you will probably be shocked that I could not smell or taste it. But I faithfully got my Tablespoon of it almost every hour throughout that day. And by that evening I could begin to taste it- just a bit. Oh and yes - I forgot to mention - it is chunky. So as I took it every hour - I had to chew up the garlic, onion, and ginger. The next morning I began again to take a Tablespoon about every hour and I could taste it more and more. I truly believe that it was this concoction that helped me get my sense of taste and smell back. It is a keeper of a recipe - for sure!!

Soon I will try to write up a post about the herbs.

Healthy Tidbits ~ Do You Want Strong Bones?

So in the post "What Causes Weak Bone?" we found out what causes weak bones. Today we want to look at a few things that will help us to have strong bones.

Weight bearing exercising - walking is good and works the big muscles of the legs, but you also need to include into your weekly schedule time to work out with hand weights. I have shared before but I will share again about a great resource - Rise Up Ministries has 7 - 30 minute workouts available- I believe 5 of which are with hand weights. Try to work out with weights at least 2 times a week for stronger bones.

Here is a great list of sources of calcium that you can get from a plant based diet.

Be sure and get sunshine so you can get ;your Vit. D and if you don't think you are getting enough - you may want to take a supplement

Try to include these dozen things ~ daily

Recently I have come across something that has helped me tremendously and I wanted to share it with you - just in case you too could benefit from this. This video is less than 10 minutes but there is some great information! It has really helped me in planning for my meals, which by the way is very helpful. Planning helps us make much better choices over all. This is basically a list of things that are beneficial to make sure you get every day. Different foods provide different nutrients and when we leave certain food groups off - we are missing out on the health benefits they provide. God created some awesome foods for us to eat and enjoy. I am so thankful that He loved us so much to do this for us! Aren't you? :O)

Healthy Tidbits series...

I hope everyone had a great Christmas! We did but since one of our sons had to work we had to wait till he got home before we could have supper and then open presents. We had a great time but I got to bed too late considering that I had to wake up at 4:45am. Oh and did I mention that my husband and I spent several hours at the ER on Christmas Eve day because we both have an upper respiratory infection along with bronchitis. So to say the least I am super tired this morning. I would appreciate prayers that the day goes well. I will be taking care of my granddaughter all week. And I'd like to have enough energy to play with her. I hope you all are well. Now on to the little tidbit I am sharing today.

"Iron is needed for healthy blood. It helps in protein metabolism and to promote growth. Iron is found in many plant foods, including dark leafy greens (such as collards and kale), lentils, raisins, soy products and many iron-fortified foods."

Health Tidbits

Almonds reduce death by coronary disease by 50%
Eating just 5 almonds a day is very helpful!

Walnuts help protect against depression, good for brain health and so much more.

Nuts have fat - but it is the healthy kind of fat. You need fat in your diet but it is best to get your fat from healthy fat foods.

There are so many benefits of eating nuts.

I am sure that if you googled "health benefits of eating nuts"
you will find a lot of results- by the way - I just went to google to check and guess what? It came up with 139,000,000 results! Wowsers!

:Health Tidbits - with a special bonus

Today I am going to get back to sharing something health related on Wednesdays. Hopefully this will be an encouragement to you and me to take better care of ourselves.

Sometimes we can get discouraged when we know that genetically we are more likely to get some sort of disease. But what we need to remember is that Genetics is only 30% of what determines our futures. Genetics just points the gun at us. It is our behavior that is the deciding factor of if the trigger is pulled or not. So please start making better choices to take care of yourself today.

I am speaking to myself here as well. I needed to write this out. As I shared last week - and then deleted it because I felt it was too negative and didn't want to discourage anyone- I have been struggling with some personal issues that has really discouraged me. And in the discouragement I have made some poor choices. I tend to be an emotional eater and sweets is my go to when I am in that unhealthy state of mine.

We all deal with the flesh and its desire for what it wants - even when what it wants is not what is best for us. I am being reminded that in these instances we need to surrender our will to God and allow Him to guide us.

We are told in James:

Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
James 4:7

When we are tempted - if we will submit ourselves to God - He gives us the power to resist the devil and the devil will flee! I looked up a couple of words in my Strong's Concordance:

Resist:
~ to stand against
Oppose-resist, withstand

Flee:
~ to run away
to vanish, escape, flee(away)

We can't resist in our own power -the flesh is weak

Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation.
The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."
Matthew 26:41

But God is faithful:

No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
1 Corinthians 10:13

3 But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one.
2 Thessalonians 3:3

I understand it is hard to resist temptation - I have been failing miserable lately. But there is always hope. We can put our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and He will help us. We just need to call on Him.

Usually our Health Tidbit doesn't have so much scriptures in it - but this is something that I have been processing lately and when I decided what health tidbit to post today I felt it was the perfect opportunity for me to share the rest with you. Hopefully to those of you who may be struggling right along side me - will be encouraged by these verses and thoughts that the Holy Spirit impressed upon my heart. It can be hard but never give up - no matter how many times we fall we have a loving heavenly Father who is there to pick us up again.

Healthy Tidbits ~ One thing to help prevent Osteoporosis 1

During the camp meeting seminar that Dr Bryce had - he said it is great to walk, but if you are only walking you will probably get osteoporosis. He suggests working out with hand weights 30 minutes 2 times a week. Here is a link to a great resource to help you achieve this goal.

Rise Up Ministries has 7 videos available to watch - 5 of them are weight work outs. If you have never worked out with hand weights - you will probably want to start small - like 1-3 pounds. In fact, you may want to start off using water bottles and then transition over to using hand weights. Let us do what we can to prevent osteoporosis! Join me in working out with weights! :O)

Health Tidbits - You Probably Aren't Getting Enough of This?

So when I went to a couple of health seminars during camping I had the privilege to see Karen Houghton who wrote this cookbook:
During her talk she shared that it is best for us to shoot for 40 grams of fiber each day! And her suggestion is that you try to get 1/3- 1/2 of your fiber grams for breakfast. Since it is best to eat like a king for breakfast, a prince for lunch and a pauper for supper.

I was told by a friend who is working at a health retreat - that the Dr at the retreat suggests those who have had cancer shoot for 60 grams of fiber per day. I have been trying to have more and more plant based diet to improve the amount of fiber I get.  And I will be sharing a couple of ways I am getting my fiber in another post.

This is a great cookbook - I highly recommend it.

Oh one I would like to get that was recommended at a seminar is called "From Plant to Plate" so I am on the look out for a copy of this cookbook.  :O)
*****************************************************************

On an unrelated topic- my MIL is having a medical procedure done today so she and I will probably be at the hospital a good part of the day. Please be praying all goes well and that their is not any cancer. Also for me. Yesterday she had two appointments and I spent a good amount of that day with her as well and by the time I was headed home I had quite a headache. Please pray that I can get through the day without another headache. It can just be stressful dealing with everything.
*************************************************************************

I also found out that my favorite quilt shop will be closing in just a couple of months. At July's BOM we will be getting two blocks and then in Aug we will get our very last block. She is having a going out of business sale now- so I have bought a few pieces of backing fabric so that I can work on getting some of my past BOM put together.  BOM is how I learned to quilt and if it had not been for this quilt shop, I would not be a quilter today. She has made an impact in our community.

Ok - that is all. I really need to get off of here and get busy. Hope you all have a great day! :o)

Health Tidbits~ Safest Source for Omega-3

So - fish has been touted as a great source for Omega-3 but the fact that fish is now getting higher and higher amounts of mercury in them - it is better idea to find a plant based source for our Omega-3. Flaxseed is an awesome source for it.

Buy flaxseeds and ground just what you will be using at that time in a coffee grinder. I leave mine on my counter and actually grind my flaxseeds - dump the contents out of the holder and put the lid back on - after just wiping it out. I don't think you have to clean it up every single time.

Once you grind flaxseeds they begin to oxidize and lose the nutritional value - so only grind what you need for that time period.

Good ways to use ground flaxseeds:
  • smoothies
  • on your oat groats
  • in your salads
  • in your breads
Oh and yes - you need to grind them - if you don't, then the seeds just pass right through you and you get no benefits from them.

Chia Seeds and Walnuts are a couple of other good sources for Omega-3.

Health Tidbits

Last week I was blessed to be able to go to camp meeting. During the day awesome seminars were offered. I was enjoyed every seminar I was able to attend. Several of the seminars that I chose to go to were health related events. And because I went to several health seminars and realized how interested I am in learning healthy information I decided to start a new series here on my blog. So I will do my best to have a Healthy Nuggets post every Wednesday. I should never run out of things to post about with all the books I have on the subject, and besides last week the lady at my church who is in charge of health promotion(don't remember the real title of the job- but you get the idea) approached me about helping her out and shared with me her ideas for the year. She has some great ideas! One of the coolest things planned is she is going to see if Dr Bryce can come to our church to do a program!! Anyway so my biggest problem with coming up with a post each Wednesday will be what to share from the list I have already started!

Today I am going to share something that was said by Dr Bryce last week at the seminar I attended. I have heard that Turmeric was something great to take as an anti inflammatory. And I have also heard it is great for anti cancer but last week I heard something that makes turmeric even more of a wonder food!

Dr Bryce said that Turmeric helps prevent new fat cells from developing!!!! Now wouldn't that be wonderful?! So now I need to learn new ways to incorporate Turmeric into my diet. Any of you have any great ideas for me? I know that I have some ladies reading that are very knowledgeable! If you have any help for me please leave a comment- I'd love to get some great ideas!!

Be sure to check back next Wednesday for our next installment of Healthy Nuggets! :)
