The Rock
"He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just."
Deuteronomy 32:4 NIV
- Name of God the Father
- The name "the Rock" appears thirteen times in scriptures.
- Rocks have always been a symbol of strength and steadfastness. Calling upon God as The Rock is a simple metaphor everyone can understand.
- Knowing he was about to die. Moses wrote The Book of the Law to help guide the "stiff-necked" Israelites. He gathered their leaders together for one last speech and began y proclaiming God as the Rock they should rely on.
In biblical times, rock would have been guideposts in the desert for generations of travelers and comprised the structure of sturdy homes, bombs, and fortresses. In a time when people often lived nomadic lifestyles(either by choice or by conflict), very few things were permanent; and for this reason, things that withstood the test of time wee cherished greatly.
God takes the idea of permanence to the extreme. After all, He existed before the rocks were made and will still be around when they are no more. God is there for anyone to hold on to in tempestuous waters and hide behind in fearsome storms. He is there to build our lives, our families, and our futures upon. A the Gospel writer Matthew pointed out, the foolish person builds their house on changeable foundations(the sand), but the wise person builds their house on The Rock.
