December 21st, I received a message from my stepmom informing me and my sister that the Alzheimer's was taking its toll on my Dad's health. He wasn't wanting to eat and getting too weak to walk to the bathroom nearby. Because his mother had Alzheimer's, and his father had dementia and now my Dad being in the last stages of Alzheimer's- made me know that I HAD to make changes in my life.
No longer id I have the luxury of vacillating between being healthy and allowing my flesh to rule. It was time to follow the health principals I knew would lead to better health for myself. And best of all it would give me a better chance at avoiding Alzheimer's and dementia.
I had written this quote on an index card months before. I don't even remember where I heard it. But when I realized that my health really depended on my choices, I added this index card to my mirror.
I did not set some time in the future to start making healthy choices. In the past I would have said I'll start on Monday or after I can go to store and buy healthy groceries. Thankfully I already had healthy food in my house. I had just been eating a lot of junk along with the healthy stuff. So, on December 22, I decided to make my health a priority. And I haven't looked back.
My Dad and Grandma (and a month later I found out that 4 of my grandmothers 6 siblings) had Alzheimer's and my grandfather had dementia, but I can choose to make my health a priority. I can choose foods that give my body the nutrition it needs, and I can exercise, drink water, get fresh air and sunshine. All the things I know are good for me and leave the rest to God- trusting in Him and allow Him to guide me.
